| Welcome to AMIRA |
|
AMIRA is a pan-European research and technology development project with the aim of providing rapid, relevant and reliable time-critical information to support urgent and critical diagnostics and decisions that must be taken by 'mobile workers' at the point where they are undertaking their work. It could be at an emergency incident, by the side of a road, or on an oilrig - the location is irrelevant.

Diagnose the source of a problem
Such a mobile worker may have to diagnose the source of a problem. It may be a rarely experienced problem, or at least something not seen before in either training or experience. The criticality of the situation may range from simply one of time, to a life-threatening emergency.
In order to identify and resolve the problem encountered, such a person needs access to multiple sources of information , provided in a meaningful way via a mobile processing and communications device with at least speech input and possibly a hands-free kit to connect to an interactive system.
Today, such an intelligent, intuitive system does not exist. AMIRA's goal is to provide just such a solution.
Variety of applications
The technical challenge facing AMIRA is to develop a set of reusable components using search, reasoning, speech dialogue technology and collaborative working techniques that can be used to create a variety of applications for use by mobile workers operating in safety or business critical situations in the field. To achieve and prove the validity of this goal, a wireless, easy to use, intelligent, real-time diagnostic and decision support application for the mobile worker is being created - accessed via devices such as wireless earphone/microphone, PDA, mobile telephone, or laptop computer. AMIRA will be capable of being used across a diverse range of disciplines and sectors.
Speech dialogue interface.
Building on the work and results of current and previous RTD projects, AMIRA is widening the applicability of advanced search and reasoning technologies to make it possible to access these through a speech dialogue interface. AMIRA is funded by the European Commission's 6th Framework Programme (IST-2003-511740) and brings together experts from academia and the private sector in France, Germany, Norway and the UK. |
